 Day 3 - NAIA - Jimmies Bring Home 10 All-America Plaques  3/6/2010

Katie Conlon and Alyssa Bossler earned NAIA All-American status in individual events on Saturday and then helped the Jimmie Distance Medley Relay team to a 4th place finish, a new school record, and each picked up their third All-American plaque of the meet. Madey Hornung and AnnaLiesa Fauth joined Katie and Alyssa on the award stand in the DMR. Conlon finished 3rd in the 3000 meters in a personal-best and new school record time of 9:51.36. Bossler finished 6th in the mile, also with a personal-best time of 5:07.73.

In the DMR, Alyssa Bossler ran the 1200 in 3:43.8, AnnaLiesa Fauth blazed the 400 in 56.7, Madey Hornung ran 2:20.1 in the 800 and Katie Conlon ran the anchor 1600 in 5:04.3 approximately an hour after her 3000 final. The Jimmie Distance Medley time of 12:04.88 bettered the time set last year when the Jimmies also placed 4th in the NAIA National meet in 12:07.63. Emmy Bentley was a member of the team that set the record and earned All-America honors a year ago.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Madey Hornung placed 8th in the finals of the 800 and Sarah Skipper did not place in the high jump.

The Jimmies finished the meet with 13 points and 14th place as a team.

Coach Clark's Summary:

Our runners did everything so well leading up to Saturday, that they created a busy final afternoon for themselves. Our goal for Saturday was to do as well as we possible could in the individual events for which we had qualified and leave the Distance Medley Relay at the conclusion of the meet to run with whatever energy we could muster.

12:25 PM: The day started off wonderfully, as Alyssa Bossler passed and outkicked two very good runners on the last curve of the finals of the Mile Run to run a career best 5:07.73 and earn her first individual All-America honors with a 6th place finish.

1:30 PM: Sarah Skipper competed in the high jump, but failed to clear the 5' 3" opening height, just missing on her third attempt.

1:30 PM: Madey Hornung placed 8th in the finals of the 800 meters in her 5th race of that distance in the meet.

2:05 PM: Katie Conlon ran to a 3rd place finish in the 3000 Meter finals, lowering her own school record to 9:51.36 - 9 seconds faster than her NAIA leading time coming into the meet. Katie was chasing down the 2009 NAIA national cross country champion - Justyna Mudy of Shorter College - and fell a stride short of second place.

3:30 PM: Distance Medley Relay time - Alyssa Bossler (who had already run 2 one mile races, a 1200, and 2 x 800 races in the meet led off with a 3:43.0 in the 1200 meter leg - 3 seconds faster than her preliminary time when she was fresh. Alyssa handed off to AnnaLiesa Fauth - running the 400 leg - and AnnaLiesa exploded to a tremendous time of 56.7 - her career best relay split by over 2 seconds. Madey Hornung was next, running the 800. Madey was running her 6th 800 of the meet and had just struggled through a rough open 800 final - but Madey put together an outstanding race to hand off after a 2:20.1 split to Katie Conlon for the 1600 anchor leg. I was hoping Katie just had enough in her to keep us in the running for a place, as her distance total in the meet mounted up to 10,800 meters of quality racing and she was just coming off the best race of her life 60 minutes earlier in the 3000 final. I should not have been surprised, but I was that Katie was able to run a 5:04.8 anchor to lift us from 6th to 4th place and also propel us to a new school record, exceeding the time we ran in the final last year when we also finished 4th in 12:07.63. Our time of 12:04.88 would have won the meet last year. Bossler, Fauth, and Conlon were members of the previous school record team, along with Emmylyn Bentley.

I am just about as proud as a coach can be of our relay teams, but not just because they ran so well in the relays, but because they also competed so hard and so well in their individual events.

Our 4 x 800 relay team came into the meet ranked ranked 8th with a qualifying time of 9:34.14 and responded to the competition and ran a school record 9:17.16 in the semis before finishing 5th in 9:19.41.
We did not have a bad leg in either of our 4 x 800 races. Emmy Bentley ran her two best 800s of the season and everyone just ran extremely well.

The Distance Medley Relay team came in ranked 6th with a qualifying mark of 12:30.63. They stepped up the intensity as the competition got tougher, running 12:19.07 in the semis and 12:04.88 in the finals.
Again, we had good solid legs through the semis and finals. Marissa Curry ran the 400 in the semifinals and ran very well to help us get to the finals, with Fauth taking over the 400 leg in the finals.

I am so happy for Alyssa and Katie that they were able to earn individual All-America honors, but I think they would both say that sharing the All-America honors with their teammates in the relays is even more rewarding.

I have so much respect for how hard our ladies work and confidence in their ability to race, that nothing should surprise me, but their attitudes and the way they approached each race one at a time and refused to give in to fatigue after so many races, was just special.

Even those who did not run in the actual relays, warmed up with the relay runners to be ready as alternates just in case someone cramped up or had any problems.

Katie Conlon is a 7-time NAIA All-American in cross country and track and has not had an outdoor track season yet. Alyssa is now a 4-time All-American. Fauth and Bentley both earned their second All-American honors and Hornung joined them as 2-time All-Americans.
