John L. Wilson Scholarship Application

Full Tuition for Four Years

Thank you for requesting information regarding the Jamestown College Wilson Scholarship. The Wilson Scholarship provides full tuition renewable for four years and was established in memory of the late Dr. John L. Wilson and his wife, Palma. There are up to four scholarships given to freshmen each year. The eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • Recipients must reside on campus for all four years.
  • Applicant must demonstrate commendable academic and leadership skills.
  • Applicant is required to participate in an on-campus interview, essay and examination.

The Wilson Scholarship competition is scheduled for February 20, 2012. On the day of the competition, you must meet the minimum requirements which are: minimum grade point average of 3.5 AND an ACT composite score of 24 or SAT total score of 1110 (critical reading plus math).

The Legacy of John L. Wilson at Jamestown College

John L. Wilson was born in Indiana and raised in North Dakota, graduating from high school in Inkster, N.D. He earned both a bachelor of arts/bachelor of science from Jamestown College, and both a master of arts/master of science degree from the University of Oregon, his doctorate from the University of Minnesota.

As a talented research chemist, Dr. Wilson developed new products for Economic Laboratories, Inc., which helped make life easier and safer for people throughout the world. He was an active participant and leader in chemical and engineering societies. Dr Wilson, as a devout Christian, worked for many religious and charitable causes and was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He also helped many generations of young people with their education and careers as a teacher and a coach.

Dr. Wilson was interim President of Jamestown College from 1968 to 1969 and also earned President Emeritus and Trustee Emeritus honors. He served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1957 until his death in 1983. Dr. Wilson devoted a large share of his time, talents, energy, and enthusiasm to Jamestown College. The Wilson Scholarship, Wilson Hall, and Wilson Memorial Chapel bear his name today.
